The evening will launch the Comber Communities’ Commemoration of (249) 2Lt Edmund de Wind who valiantly who gave his life in the Great War. The year- long commemoration will culminate in the unveiling of a memorial in Comber Square on Thursday 23 March 2018, the date of his death on the battlefield.
The memorial group comprises of members drawn from Comber Regeneration Community Partnership, The Royal British Legion, Comber Historical Society and Ards and North Down Council.
Jim Hmailton stated "Now is the right time to honour and reflect on the valour of this estradordinary person. There is a new generation who are not familiar with him and, hopefully, this will help draw them into this famous piece of history."
Dr Ian Moles will launch the Edmund de Wind Memorial Funde at the event. WW1 memorabilia and photgraps will be on display at the event aiming to provide an insight into the life of de Wind. Keynote speakers will include local auther, historian and Hon OC Keith Haines, and prominent Comber Historical Society member Desmond Rainey, who has also written a number of local history books.
